Managing Oneself
Throughout history, people had little need to manage
their careers--they were born into their station in life or, in the recent
past, they relied on their companies to chart their career paths. But times
have drastically changed. Today, we must all learn to manage ourselves. What
does that mean? According to Peter Drucker, it means we have to learn to
develop ourselves.

| The Dream Confessor
What people usually mean is that they have a vague, nagging sense that
there's something they're supposed to be doing with their life but they
don't know what. They hope that I'll be able to tell them how to figure it
out, or at least how to make it up. But in my experience, most people know
exactly what they'd really like to be doing with their lives - the trick is
to get them to admit it to themselves and ultimately the world.

| The Power of Commitment
There is a tremendous discrepancy between what we say we want and what (if
anything) we demonstrate our commitment to having. When these two things are
aligned, the world is our oyster, and we experience life as a continual
unfoldment of positive challenges and pleasant rewards. When they are out of
sync, we experience struggle, helplessness, depression, and despair.

| The Top 10 Ways to
Recognize Career or Business Burnout When you
first started your present career or opened your business, you were most
likely filled with excitement and entertaining visions of future
career/business growth, challenge, and increased Moolah (aka $$$). But
somewhere along the line, the day to day challenges with which you've been
constantly faced may have had a tendency to wear your excitement and
anticipation down to a bare whisper.
Career burnout tends to progress slowly from a mild
stage, to a moderate more noticeable stage, and left unchecked, career
burnout can eventually progress to a dangerous, severe stage that takes the
pleasure out of life and living.

Why Everyone in an Enterprise Can - and Should - Be a Leader
Leadership doesn't just start at the top. Leaders can
also be found at the bottom of an organization and at just about every place
in between. In this special report by
Knowledge@Wharton and The
McKinsey Quarterly, the management journal of consulting firm McKinsey &
Co., experts from McKinsey and Wharton point out that regardless of whether
people are on the top line or the front line, they should explore ways to
exercise their leadership potential to the fullest. That is the only way in
which they can create meaningful working lives for themselves and the
organization can get the most from their efforts. |

| Sign Your Own Permission Slip
Growing up, permission slips were a big part of school
life – essential to participating in special projects, field trips, or class
trips out of state. For me to take part in any adventure outside of the
classroom, my mother or father had to sign the slip. Now, as an adult, I can
sign my own permission slip. In fact, I don't even need one! Yet I realize
how often I don't give myself permission to be who I want to be or do what I
want to do.
